  1. This talk made me think of where the Constitution has not yet gone far enough in the provision of liberty. I heard mention of permitting retroactive changes of contract, and of certain individuals compelling legislators to vote in a certain way, under authority of legal threat. That enlightenment trend of egalitarianism, which saw the French Revolution as a high water mark, could use a renewal.

    As an aside, the contemporary perspectives on governmental democracy were taken from both sides of the Mediterranean; there was question as to what could be accomplished without a priestly class. I don't like the argument that simply having more people engaged in voting connotes more democracy; that interpretation equivocates democracy and populism.
