John Cleese labels Belgians “fat, lazy, beer-sodden, pseudo-French b******s” – Daily News

Belgians have reacted in shock after John Cleese described them as “lazy, fat, beer-sodden, pseudo-French b*stards ”  John Cleese made the remark after finishing his last show of his European Tour called “The Last Time To See Me Before I Die ”  Cleese, who visited the Belgian city of Hasselt in the Dutch-speaking province of Limburg at the end of May, said it was the worst experience of his tour  Cleese wrote: “Just finished 35th show of 35. Best audiences: Helsinki, Reykjavik, Bergen, Copenhagen, Zwolle, Hamburg, Cologne, Breda, Haarlem, Zurich, Frankfurt, Vienna and Zagreb  “Worst: Lazy, fat, beer-sodden, pseudo-French Belgian b*stards in Hasselt.”  He compared doing the show in Hasselt to “reading Moby Dick to nomads” and called those who came to see him “the worst audience ever”  Belgians reacted with shock and outrage after hearing about Cleese’s criticism.  A spokeswoman of the Ethias Arena in which Cleese performed said that “we are shocked by the Tweet” and “we absolutely don’t recognise the characterisation at all”  The spokeswoman said: “Lazy, fat and beer-sodden? Those are really not our visitors  “And it is certainly not that people from Hasselt and surroundings cannot behave themselves as opposed to those in other European cities ”  Tom Bertels, whose company Live Comedy organised the Hasselt show, said that “it was indeed sweaty and scorching hot in the auditorium which was more akin to a sauna”  Bertels said: “But Cleese got two standing ovations. One time it was forced, but the other time spontaneous It was certainly not a bad performance.  “Not that we are bothered too much by Cleese’s Tweet, we know very well from where it comes ”  Cleese has repeatedly blasted the Belgians before in the run-up to the Hasselt gig  He said: “You know the shows are all sold out except for the two in Belgium.  “Belgians, pull your socks up It’s generally very well understood in Europe that you’re a very lazy, fat bunch of b*stards so move your ass, or I’ll never eat your chocolates again ”  Monty Python also used to make fun of the Belgians, with some saying the remarks can be seen as a continuation of a 1973 sketch in which Michael Palin goes looking for the most denigrating term to describe the Belgians, and in the end settled for “miserable fat Belgian b*stards ”
